Avanzando hacia la Igualdad en Parla

The Parla City Council commemorates the upcoming March 8, International Women’s Day, with a program of collective activities – coordinated with other municipal areas, the Sectorial Council for Equality, educational centers, and civic entities – that urges citizens to delve deeper into the feminist struggle "Taking Steps towards Equality," as this year’s motto states.

"On this March 8, International Women’s Day, we continue to advocate, with more strength than ever, for the need for real equality between women and men. It is true that over time, we have taken significant steps towards real equality, thanks to the struggle led by many women who gave everything to move towards a fairer future, free from violence and discrimination. However, we are aware of the many obstacles we still need to overcome in a political and social context where some sectors continue to question feminism, despite it being the only way to achieve what we deserve," says the Councilor for Equality, Feminism, and LGBTQI+, Marina Morcillo, who invites all citizens to participate in this program of activities with a clear objective: "let’s keep taking steps towards Equality."

Institutional Event, March 7 at the Jaime Salom Theater

The institutional event in honor of International Women’s Day will take place on March 7, at 6:30 pm, at the Jaime Salom Theater. It will be held in the afternoon to facilitate the participation of the entire population and will feature the presence of Nosotras Conciertos Versos, a group formed by María Pámpanas and Beatriz Ortiz, who, through art, music, and poetry, seek to evoke emotions from feminism and fight against gender violence.

Prior to this, you can enjoy the bibliographic exhibition in honor of March 8 at the municipal libraries of Parla (until March 14), and the presentation of the Violet Points Network will take place at the Pedro Zerolo Youth Center with the Parla High Schools.

The weekend will feature the performance of the show "Women II," by the Isaac Albéniz Municipal Dance School, and the II Feminist Race of Parla will take place, starting from Bulevar Sur, which is gaining popularity in terms of registrations.

Activities in the "Violet Garden," conferences, and cinema

This year, Bartolomé Hurtado Park, next to the Hermitage, will be an important meeting point in the March 8 program, as it will host the "Violet Garden" project, highlighting the achievements of different women in the active and real fight for Equality. In this context, activities will be carried out with Parla’s CEIPS, users of the Sin Mirar Atrás program, families, and Seniors in Motion.

There will be no shortage of talks and conferences, such as those by Equality Associations and the interesting colloquium on forced marriages and other violence from an intercultural perspective, which will take place on Tuesday, March 11, at 6 pm at the Conference Hall of the Casa de la Cultura. There will also be exhibitions like the participatory photographic exhibition "The Brides of Parla," which reflects, through images, on the role of women in our city.

The Spazio Cines cinema at El Ferial will screen the award-winning short documentary "The Brides of the South" by Elena López Riera on Wednesday, March 12, at 6 pm, followed by a discussion. And on Friday, March 14, it will be the turn of ‘Forgotten Women,’ a screening from the intercultural cinema cycle AFÍN in the context of March 8.

March 8 with entities and associations of Parla

Many entities and associations are also contributing to this program. The La Paz Basketball Club will celebrate the ‘3×3 For Equality’ basketball tournament on March 9, Oráculo del Sur will organize various activities – ‘8M(ore geeky)’ – at the Vicente Aleixandre Associative Space, Mujeres para la Democracia will organize a screening of short films for Equality, and the La Laguna Neighborhood Association will host a talk on ‘Pioneers: Women Who Changed the World.’
