Amenazas de muerte contra profesoras en Parla por regular el hiyab y burka

In Madrid, the controversy over the use of veils in classrooms continues. Several teachers from various institutes have been threatened. Some claim to have received death threats in Parla, Madrid. In Spain, there are over two and a half million Muslims, mainly concentrated in Catalonia, Andalusia, and Madrid. The debate revolves around whether they can attend classes wearing veils and burkas, covering their entire bodies.

In Spain, there is a legal vacuum, and education is dependent on the Autonomous Communities. For instance, in Madrid, each school decides on the dress code, including head coverings. Sonia has spoken out against the death threats, stating, «There is a coordinated campaign on social media with all kinds of insults.» Elena has also faced backlash for presenting an initiative in Congress aimed at regulating the use of veils in classes, especially for minors, and the use of burkas in public spaces.

These teachers recount that Moroccan students have requested veils. They believe that many are being forced to wear them. Sonia points out, «There are women and girls who are being pressured to wear the hijab.» In their latest statement, they assert that the insults and threats they are receiving demonstrate the challenges faced by women living in Muslim environments when it comes to freely choosing whether to cover themselves or not.

Students protested against the ban on wearing hijabs in three institutes in Parla at the end of February. The demonstration, organized by the Student Union, brought together students from IES Nicolás Copérnico, the Narcís Monturiol Institute, and Humanejos, all of which have internal regulations prohibiting the use of hijabs in classrooms.

Teachers defend the internal regulations, clarifying that they are not targeting veils but rather any head covering that could facilitate cheating in exams. Some students criticize the inclusion of caps, hoods, and hijabs in the same category, arguing that the hijab should be viewed as a religious symbol.
